🧼 “The Unspoken Rules”: BJJ Mat Etiquette & Hygiene “No One Tells You” (But Will Make You Lose Friends)

Introduction: Skill Doesn’t Matter If You Smell

In the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we often obsess over the “flashy” stuff: Berimbolos, heel hooks, and high-level guard passes. But there is one factor more important than your belt color or your win-loss record: “Trainability.”

You could be a world-class athlete, but if your nails are like Wolverine’s claws or your Gi smells like a fermented gym bag, your teammates will slowly stop asking you to roll. In BJJ, we are literally in each other’s personal space. Respecting that space through hygiene isn’t just a suggestion; it’s a requirement for a healthy academy.

These rules aren’t always written on the wall, but they are the foundation of the Marcelo Silva Martial Arts culture at BJJ Bangkok. Here is your guide to being the partner everyone wants to roll with.

Your Body is a Temple (Body Hygiene)

1. The Wolverine Rule (Nails)

Long nails are the #1 cause of non-combat injuries. In a scramble, a jagged nail can slice through skin like a razor, leaving your partner with a permanent scar or an infection risk.

  • The Rule: Trim your fingernails and toenails short enough that no white part is visible.

  • Pro Tip: File them down so there are no sharp edges. Cut them at home, not on the mats.

2. Odor Control & Breath

BJJ is a close-contact sport. If you’ve been at work all day, your “fresh sweat” has become “stale odor.”

  • Advice: Shower before class if possible. Use deodorant.

  • Breath: No one wants to be trapped in a Cross-face (Wikipedia) smelling last night’s garlic dinner. Brush your teeth or use mouthwash before you step onto the mats.

3. Hair & Jewelry

  • Long Hair: Tie it back securely in a bun or braids. Loose hair gets stepped on or trapped under someone’s knee.

  • Jewelry: Remove all rings, necklaces, and piercings. A ring can easily “deglove” a finger during a grip fight, and earrings can be ripped out instantly.

Your Armor (Gi & No-Gi Gear)

1. The One-Wear Rule (The 100% Washing Policy)

NEVER wear a used Gi twice without washing it. Even if you “only sweat a little” and it “smells fine,” bacteria like Staphylococcus (Wikipedia) and Ringworm (Wikipedia) thrive in damp fabric. Once you start sweating again, that “clean” Gi will release a toxic ammonia smell.

  • At BJJ Bangkok: We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for dirty gear. Wash your Gi, rash guards, and shorts after every single session.

2. The Belt Myth: Yes, You Must Wash It

There is an old myth that “washing your belt washes away the knowledge.” This is scientifically incorrect. What you are actually washing away is MRSA and fungus. Your belt touches the mat just as much as your Gi. Wash your belt.

The Flip-Flop Law (Mat Etiquette)

This is perhaps the most critical rule in any Marcelo Silva Martial Arts academy.

  1. No Shoes on the Mat: Street shoes carry dirt, glass, and bacteria.

  2. No Bare Feet off the Mat: This is the big one. If you walk to the bathroom barefoot, you are picking up Urine (Wikipedia) and bacteria on your feet. When you step back onto the mat, you transfer those germs to the place where your partners put their faces.

Always wear flip-flops the moment your feet leave the mat.

The Sickness Policy (Public Safety First)

We appreciate your dedication, but “pushing through the pain” doesn’t apply to contagious illnesses.

  • Skin Issues: If you see a suspicious red ring, a cluster of bumps, or a weeping sore, do not come to the gym. Get it checked by a doctor.

  • Flu/Cold: If you are coughing, sneezing, or have a fever, stay home. One “dedicated” day from you could put the entire team out of commission for a week.

At BJJ Bangkok, we prioritize the health of the collective over the training of the individual.

Social Etiquette & Respect

1. Respecting Seniority & Space

If your rolling pair gets too close to a pair of Higher Belts (Purple, Brown, Black), the lower belts are responsible for stopping and moving to a safer spot. It is a sign of respect and spatial awareness.

2. The “No Slamming” Rule

Unless you are in a high-level competition class specifically drilling it, never slam your partner to escape a submission. It is dangerous, unnecessary, and a fast way to get banned from rolling.

Conclusion: Respect is the Heart of BJJ

Following “The Unspoken Rules” isn’t about being picky; it’s about showing respect. When you show up clean, trimmed, and healthy, you are saying: “I respect you, I respect your health, and I respect this academy.”

At BJJ Bangkok, we are proud of our professional and welcoming culture. We believe that a clean environment creates better athletes and longer-lasting careers. If you’re looking for a gym that takes your safety and hygiene as seriously as your technique, you’ve found your home.

“Clean Gi, Clean Body, Clean Technique.”

FAQ: BJJ Hygiene & Etiquette

Q1: Can I reuse my Gi if I only did a light drilling class? A: No. Bacteria growth starts the moment the Gi becomes damp. Always wash it after every use to prevent skin infections.

Q2: How do I get the “funk” out of my old Gi? A: If a Gi still smells after a wash, try adding a cup of white vinegar or a specialized sports detergent to the cycle. Avoid using too much fabric softener, as it can trap bacteria in the fibers.

Q3: Is it okay to refuse a roll with someone who has poor hygiene? A: Yes. You have every right to protect your health. If someone has long nails or a dirty Gi, you can politely decline.

Q4: How soon can I return to the mats after Ringworm? A: You must wait until the lesion is completely gone and you have been using anti-fungal medication for at least 7-10 days. When in doubt, ask your coach at BJJ Bangkok.

Q5: Why is Marcelo Silva Martial Art so strict about these rules? A: Because longevity is our goal. You can’t train for life if the gym is constantly sidelined by preventable infections or injuries.
